The Horst Company Comes Through For Denkai

The Horst Company of Greeley generously donated all the necessary equipment to build multiple indoor dog runs for our dogs during the winter months. Thank you SO much to the Horst Company in helping us to complete this project!

Thanks to the Christopher Westin Brown Fund for a $5000.00 grant for general operating expenses of the Sanctuary. This funding has been used towards hay, veterinary bills, senior feed, and other overhead costs.

Readers Do Rescue Denkai!

Readers to the Rescue has raised a total of $3,000.00 for the animals here at Denkai Sanctuary. As of last weekend, 6,650 children participated in this program, the number is still climbing. This is record breaking, never before has the library had this number of children show up to read for any cause.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to the Fort Collins Public Library District and the thousands of caring children and parents that have participated in Readers to the Rescue. Your support has helped to save the lives of over 100 animals in need.

Saving Mares and Foals from Horse Slaughter
June 2007

Denkai is providing the following for informational purposes.

Sometime during the late hours of June 11, 2007 and the early hours of June 12, 2007 the second mare in just about one month's time, layed down on the kill floor at the Cavel horse slaughter plant in DeKalb, IL.

The heavily pregnant mare had arrived with a shipment of horses on June 11th, but the plant at days end still had many horses remaining there that they simply ran out of time to kill that day. Upon arrival at the plant at 5:00 a.m. June 12th, one of the USDA inspectors noticed that a tiny filly foal had been born to an injured bay quarter horse mare, and immediately ordered that the mare and baby be separated from the herd.

At 7:00 a.m. a second USDA inspector arrived and the fight was on to spare this mare and her tiny filly from the death sentence that awaited them. The Cavel plant was determined to euthanize the foal and slaughter the mare, but thanks to the dogged determination of one USDA inspector and his insistence that this mare and foal be spared, Cavel was ordered not to kill the mare and foal. The inspector immediately went to bat for this mare and her newborn foal, and in fact, he even went so far as to help the fragile foal to its feet and then proceeded to help the little filly to nurse.

After several hours of negotiation with his superiors, the USDA inspector convinced them that the mare and foal should be spared, and Im told that the mare and her baby have now been given to a local family that offered to provide the horses with shelter and care.

The Hooved Animal Humane Society in Woodstock, IL offered to take the mare and foal into the safety of their organization, but Mr. Tucker insisted that the mare and foal were HIS and that they would go to whomever he decided they should go to. I do not know anymore of the family that Tucker has given the horses to, but I'm told by the inspector, that the Department would be following up by continuing to check on the mare and her baby.

I have spoken with the inspector who saved this mare and foal today, and he has promised to pursue charges against all parties involved in the illegal shipment of this mare and foal, including a full investigation into whether or not, Mr. Tucker and Cavel (who claim ownership of the horses) should be held accountable as well. I have faith that this inspector will do as he has promised.

Big Snow Hits Colorado
January 2007

Back to back snow storms have hit Colorado in less than a week. This weather is especially stressful for our animals. Your help is needed to keep these animals warm, dry and fed. We are in desperate need of senior grain for our horses. Please call Cache La Poudre feed at (970)482-5092 and ask to speak with Ron or Cathy. Make sure to tell them the donation is for Denkai Animal Sanctuary.

If you would like to contribute to the many other needs we have please either click on the link in the menu on the left or send your check directly to the address above.

Your contributions go directly to helping the animals, as all of our staff is volunteer.

Denkai Animal Sanctuary has been organized to operate exclusively for charitable, scientific, prevention of cruelty to animals, and educational purposes within the meaning of section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

This Sanctuary provides adoption services and a permanent home for close to 90 animals including horses, llamas, pot bellied pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, dogs and even a few cats.

We operate through kind volunteers, and in turn give them the opportunity to foster compassion for these abused and neglected animals by helping with their maintenance and rehabilitation. We also work with several local educational establishments and have worked with mentally and physically challenged adults and kids. We believe in helping these animals and giving back to the community.
