AURORA - While technically the city will not enforce its breed ban until Wednesday, anyone who has an unregistered pit bull or several other breeds of dog has only a few more hours to comply with the law.

Once the doors lock Tuesday night at the Aurora Animal Shelter on East 32nd the law will essentially go into effect.

"They've got until 6:30pm (Tuesday), Wednesday morning we start enforcement of the ban," says Cheryl Conway, the Public Information Specialist for Aurora's Animal Care Division.

Conway says people are scrambling to comply with the law passed by the Aurora City Council last year.

The policy includes Pit Bulls, American Bulldogs, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Cane Corsos, Dogos, Filas, Presa Canarios, Presa Mallorquins and Tosa.

The annual restricted breed license costs $200. To obtain the license, owners must present the city proof they have spayed/neutered, micro chipped, currently vaccinated their dog against rabies, obtained a minimum $100,000 liability insurance and built a 6-sided kennel in the backyard.

The special license exempts those canines from a ban passed by City Council in October. Once enforcement begins, owners convicted of illegally keeping a banned breed face possible destruction of their pet and a minimum fine of $700 and/or up to one-year in jail.

The ordinance also requires banned breeds to be muzzled and walked on leashes no longer than 4-feet in length whenever off the owner's property. In addition, owners must be 21-years old.
