| UPDATE January 2008 Courtesy of Christine
We took 8 x-rays of his injured leg. Initially you thought he had a
bowed tendon, and yes that's correct. The x-rays also showed.... Ringbone-
High AND Low. Old Bowed Tendon, never healed Arthritis- Fetlock, severe!!
All joints are involved and he's not cureable. He's only 14 years young!
Appendix Quarterhorse, with some Thoroghbred mixed in.
He has a pretty bad, old injury. There is NO fracture. No break. The
veterinarian is very hopeful that a lifetime perscription of a low dose of
bute, arthritis medicine called surpass, and some natural balance
horseshoes on his two front feet only will help him be the best pasture
buddy ever! He is Gus's best buddy, and his life has value to us here! His
spirit remains upbeat, he's regained all his weight, and he's happy. He
can stay here as long as he is comfortable, and his veterinarian is
supportive that he can sustain a level of comfort. Smiley will never be
ridden with such a bad, terminal type prognosis on his leg, I don't ever
want to push him. Ringbone so severe, in both high/low wasn't good the
greatest news, but.....he did not die in that slaughterhouse, he had other
"companion plans"!!
Below is a picture of Smiley and Gus! What a pair!! |
