Smiley

UPDATE January 2008 Courtesy of Christine

We took 8 x-rays of his injured leg. Initially you thought he had a bowed tendon, and yes that's correct. The x-rays also showed.... Ringbone- High AND Low. Old Bowed Tendon, never healed Arthritis- Fetlock, severe!! All joints are involved and he's not cureable. He's only 14 years young! Appendix Quarterhorse, with some Thoroghbred mixed in.

He has a pretty bad, old injury. There is NO fracture. No break. The veterinarian is very hopeful that a lifetime perscription of a low dose of bute, arthritis medicine called surpass, and some natural balance horseshoes on his two front feet only will help him be the best pasture buddy ever! He is Gus's best buddy, and his life has value to us here! His spirit remains upbeat, he's regained all his weight, and he's happy. He can stay here as long as he is comfortable, and his veterinarian is supportive that he can sustain a level of comfort. Smiley will never be ridden with such a bad, terminal type prognosis on his leg, I don't ever want to push him. Ringbone so severe, in both high/low wasn't good the greatest news, but.....he did not die in that slaughterhouse, he had other "companion plans"!!

Below is a picture of Smiley and Gus! What a pair!!

Smiley is getting ready to move to his foster home with Christine Schultz.

Smiley is improving and gaining weight. He is pictured below with one of our volunteers, Katrina. What a loving horse!

Smiley arrives at Denkai....

Smiley is an amazing 13 year old quarterhorse Gelding. You will see from the first picture here, he has a bowed tendon (high). We were extremely concerned for Smiley upon arrival to the Stockyard, he had a horrible set of shoes on his front hooves and could not stand to move around or walk anymore. Our farrier, Darrin Hill immediately removed the shoes and trimmed his hooves back.

Smiley is a gentle and sweet horse with a kind soul and his tendon is recovering nicely every day! He will be looking for a permanent home soon!

Denkai Animal Sanctuary has been organized to operate exclusively for charitable, scientific, prevention of cruelty to animals, and educational purposes within the meaning of section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

This Sanctuary provides adoption services and a permanent home for close to 90 animals including horses, llamas, pot bellied pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, dogs and even a few cats.

We operate through kind volunteers, and in turn give them the opportunity to foster compassion for these abused and neglected animals by helping with their maintenance and rehabilitation. We also work with several local educational establishments and have worked with mentally and physically challenged adults and kids. We believe in helping these animals and giving back to the community.
